The Great Avocado Experiment (Part 3)

While I have been neglecting the posting of updates on my two avocado plants, I have not been neglecting the plants themselves.  They have grown quite a bit; the larger tree is about 12″ tall and the other is about 9″ in height.  Since posting Part 2 of my experiment, I have planted the two growing trees each in their own pot.  I reused a couple of small ceramic pots that we had laying around the house —  about 8″ to 10″ in height and about 6″ to 8″ in diameter.  During the warm Atlanta summer months, they flourished outside on our deck in 3/4 sunlight, but over the past couple of weeks we had our first frost.  I first moved the plants to the garage as to not shock them with the temperature change.  Currently, they are living on the desk in my office which gets a small amount of direct morning sunlight.  More details after the break.

SAP: Adding some life to your SAPgui menu screen

Even though alternative — and much better looking — UI’s exist for SAP, such as Netweaver Business Client, portal, and mobility, for most SAP users, SAP Gui is a way of life.  But that doesn’t mean that you have to live with its stagnant, isolated functionality.  SAP SCN contributor Joan Mas provides some steps on how to use GuiXT to expand on functionality available in the boring, old SAP Gui.

Plex Media Server, Thecus N4200, and Windows Phone 8

I never thought I would be called “old fashioned” — at least, not THIS soon — but that’s pretty much what happened.  In a time when a small monthly fee can get you access to stream countless audio files with Spotify and the like, I suppose it could seem a bit old fashioned to have an extensive MP3 library sitting in your living room.  My old fashioned-ness seems especially egregious considering that my phone, a Nokia 920, is limited to just 32 gigs of data. I can only enjoy a small fraction of that library when I am on the go.  But the Plex Media Server is putting an end to all that by creating my own personal media cloud.

SAP: Finding text strings across ABAP programs

As an SAP consultant focusing on functional configuration, I am not required to know much about ABAP.  If you’re lucky, there’s a developer within arm’s reach for handling technical efforts.  However, part of growing in your field is reaching out beyond your functional area to explore new avenues.  This ultimately makes you a better consultant.  I’m on a project currently — a divestiture of sorts — which must explore breaking apart Company Codes, Sales Organizations, and other elements.  One thing to consider — especially for mature systems — is what custom objects may be tailored for the existing organization.  This helps determine what the impact will be when creating a new Sales Organization, for instance.  But, how do you find those elements?  More importantly, how can you find references to a specific value you’re trying to change?  Read on to learn about finding text strings in ABAP programs.

SAP Divestitures Lessons Learned (ASUG NEWS)

My favorite ASUG News journalist, Courtney Bjorlin, just penned an interesting article titled ‘SAP Software and Divestitures: 4 Hard-Earned Lessons Learned’ — and “Hard-Earned” is spot on.  In it, she chronicles the struggles of Cooper Industries as they tackle the divestiture of their Tools division.  I was happy to have played a small role in the article as a contributor, sharing some of my experiences in the four SAP divestitures projects (not including my current pseudo-divestiture assignment) I have been involved with.  The delicate arrangement of stakeholders — the buying entity, the selling entity, systems integrators, divested personnel, legal representation, etc. — can make for some unique challenges.  For more details and insights into my divestiture experience, also check out my Divestiture Project Profile page.

SAP Sales & Distribution: Quick Reference Guide for the User

One of the constant struggles for SAP users and consultants alike is the attempt to recollect transaction codes and table names that are infrequently used.  Having a reliable list at your fingertips has proven to be helpful in those times of need.  That concept inspired me to compile and publish a couple of ‘quick user guides’ that can be used for that purpose.  I submit for your approval the first draft of a user-oriented guide:  SAP Sales and Distribution – Quick Reference Guide for the User.

The Great Avocado Experiment (Part 2)

It’s been over a month since I started to root my avocado seeds.  As you can see in the photo above, the roots for my more mature seed are about 4 to 5 inches long.  The stem has also begun to sprout and is just past the surface of the seed.  I’ve been noticing them drinking a lot more water, requiring a fresh bowl every couple of days.  It will still be a while before transplanting to a normal pot — at this rate, about another month or two.  Stay tuned.

SAP Mandatory Sales Text

This post is dedicated to the four hours of my life I lost trying to figure out why my mandatory header texts were misbehaving.  A client had requested that a header text be mandatory for all Credit Memo (CR) and Debit Memo (DR) documents.  Makes sense.  Standard SAP only prescribes an order reason be maintained, but sometimes you want to capture more details behind the rationale for such transactions.  “Easy breezy,” I thought.  Wrong.  Read on to master SAP Mandatory Sales Text.
